With its 1,491 meters of altitude, Mottarone separates Lake Orta from Lake Maggiore, which is why it is known as “the mountain of the two lakes”.
From the peak, on particularly clear days, it is possible to see seven lakes split between Piedmont and Lombardy.
A mountain that, till the beginning of the last century, was a place of summer grazing for cattle, scattered with shelters for shepherds, for hay and spontaneous tourists who ventured there.
Over the years, thanks to its proximity to Milan, Mottarine has become a favorite spot for naturalist painters from Lombardy who “loose” their way as they retrieve rural motifs in person.
It is now a place perfect all year round. In winter, skiers and snowshoers can take advantage of the ski lifts for a run or two. While in summer, green pastures and breathtaking scenery are ideal for relaxing with one’s family or hiking-lovers.
